Yes, the handler would use assignment attempts to figure
out what should be done.

Yes, and static binding is more efficient than dynamic binding.
Class-based exceptions are a pleasure to use in the D-language, and
do reduce the maintenance overhead when new user-defined exceptions
are added to an application.
